Degree Progress

So, you're a BIS major. Now what??

If this is your first semester at GMU, remember to submit your intent to enroll and sign up for an orientation session.

If you have not already completed and submitted the BIS application, please do so as soon as possible.

If you are not already declared as a BIS major with the Office of the Registrar, you will need to complete a Change of Academic Program form and submit the form to the BIS office. You will not be able to register for any classes until you have attended an orientation session. You will also not be allowed to register for BIS 300 unless you are declared a pre-BIS or BIS major.

The BIS Program is different than most programs on campus. The individualized part of BIS means just that. As a BIS student, you are required to be more involved in the tracking of your degree progress. Every person's degree and course track will be different.

To aid in you in going through the program as smoothly as possible, the following information and resources will be helpful as you finish your degree.

1. Activate and check your GMU email account regularly. This is a university requirement and is the method by which we will communicate with you.

2. Become familiar with the BIS Web site. Much of the information you need access to is on the Web site, including:

3. Familiarize yourself with your academic records through Patriot Web. You will need to follow your degree progress closely to ensure that you are meeting all requirements for graduation.

4. Please use the tracking worksheet (MS Excel file) to aid you in keeping track of your courses and the requirements they meet. This is not an official document and is intended for your use only. Please check with an advisor if you have any questions.

5. Bookmark, read, and regularly review the Chart your Course information. You may meet with a BIS advisor at any time by calling 703-993-4556 to make an appointment. BIS advisors are there to assist you with questions such as classes to take during the first semester you are a BIS student; general education requirements; which classes fulfill which requirements; and any remaining questions or concerns you may have regarding the BIS program.
