How did you decide on the BIS program?
I dedicated my 20s and 30s to raise my family, which I consider the most important job I’ve ever had. But when the time came to focus on myself, I realized I didn’t want to be confined to one discipline. After my journey at Mason, it became clear that my passion stemmed from a blend of different areas of study. The BIS program was the perfect fit, allowing me to combine all my talents into a unique “superpower.” I’m incredibly grateful to GMU for nurturing me to become the best version of myself.
What have you learned in a BIS class that really surprised you or changed your perspective?
I was surprised by how powerful the concept of intersectionality can be when applied across different areas of life. It taught me the importance of looking at issues from multiple perspectives, and how honoring each viewpoint with ethics and respect makes us stronger. It also shifted how I view culture, equipping me with the tools to be more equitable and responsive in the way I communicate and engage with my community.
Tell us about your dream occupation and how your BIS degree will help you achieve it.
My BIS degree has already started helping me navigate the complex school system. It's not just guiding me toward the career I’ve always dreamed of, but also empowering me to amplify the voices of others in a more intentional and meaningful way.
Have you had any internships, jobs, or volunteer experiences related to your BIS program?
Absolutely! My hard work in the BIS program has allowed me to immediately apply the tools and knowledge I’ve gained in my current job. It feels like every day at school is an opportunity to create real, positive change—turning theory into action that has a social impact.
Any accomplishments you’re proud of, or research opportunities you’ve taken advantage of here at Mason?
One accomplishment I’m proud of is the improvement in my communication and leadership skills, which have helped me open new paths in K-12 education. This is a space I’ve always been passionate about, but thanks to Mason, I’ve been able to nurture these passions in a meaningful way that allows me to lead and inspire others. Community engagement is not “one-size-fits-all.” It requires continuous, intentional, and culturally responsive approaches. By applying an ethical and equitable lens, we can communicate more effectively across cultures, on topics that truly matter, creating lasting change.
Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.
I’ve faced numerous personal barriers to get to where I am today, but I’ve learned to trust the process and rely on the support GMU provides. I’ve encountered incredible teachers and support systems throughout this journey. Walking alone is tough, but walking together makes the journey easier—and a lot more fun!
What do you think prospective BIS students need to know?
Don’t wait! I wish I’d started this journey earlier. The BIS program isn’t something to consider only after years of uncertainty; it can be your first choice, offering a way to combine your skills and passions to become the best version of yourself. Embrace it, Patriots—let’s shine brighter together!
After graduating from the BIS program in the Summer of 2025, Angela will continue her studies in the Accelerated Master's program with a concentration in Communication.
