Meet Susan Vetter Ricker, an SIS Senior, majoring in Bachelor of Individualized Study with a concentration in Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Technology.  Her academic journey reflects a deep commitment to understanding artificial intelligence—not just as a tool for innovation, but as a catalyst for ethical problem-solving and collaborative progress.

How did you decide on the BIS program?
I chose the BIS program because it gave me the freedom to design a degree that connects my experience in technology, ethics, and sustainability. After years in IT project management and later in the water industry, I wanted to study how artificial intelligence can be used responsibly to solve real-world problems. The BIS program allowed me to combine AI ethics, environmental science, and systems thinking into a cohesive academic path that reflects both my career and my values.

What have you learned in a BIS class that really surprised you or changed your perspective?
In BIS 390, I discovered how systems thinking and ethics intersect to reveal the hidden ways technology impacts communities and the environment. That course changed how I view innovation—it’s not just about what technology can do, but what it should do. It taught me that ethical reflection and sustainability aren’t add-ons to engineering—they’re essential parts of building a just and responsible future.

Tell us about your dream occupation and how your BIS degree will help you achieve it.
My dream is to work at the intersection of AI, sustainability, and public service, helping shape technology that improves infrastructure and protects the planet. The BIS degree equips me with the interdisciplinary tools to do that: integrating ethics, data-driven systems, and environmental policy to support technology that’s both intelligent and equitable.

Have you had any internships, interesting jobs, or volunteer experiences that relate to work in the BIS program?
Yes. I currently serve as the Director of Operations for a national water industry trade association. In this role, I help members navigate government policies, promote smart technology adoption, and strengthen collaboration across the sector. My BIS coursework in ethical AI and systems thinking has directly informed my work especially in understanding how to integrate innovation responsibly within critical infrastructure.

Any accomplishments you’re proud of, or research opportunities you’ve taken advantage of, here at Mason?
One of my proudest accomplishments is publishing a paper on how AI can ethically provide access to clean drinking water. My next paper expands that focus to explore AI ethics and water sustainability in data centers, a timely topic as digital infrastructure grows more resource intensive. Both projects reflect my belief that AI can and should advance justice, sustainability, and transparency. Also, I recently moderated a panel on AI and Ethics at a major water industry conference, that was such a privilege. I was invited to do it as an academic, thanks to my time and investment in my education at George Mason University.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.
People are often surprised to learn that my path to AI ethics started long before my work in the water sector. It began in high school with programming languages and mechanical drawing classes. Over the years, that foundation grew into a renaissance of computer programming, accounting, administration, operations, graphic design, and business development. Each step in a variety of industries deepened my appreciation for how systems both technical and human connect and depend on one another.

What did we miss that you think prospective BIS students need to know?
The BIS program is about possibility. It lets you connect your experiences, passions, and goals into something uniquely your own. It values curiosity and real-world relevance helping you bridge disciplines and create meaningful impact. If you’re looking for a program that helps you turn what you know and what you care about into action, BIS is the perfect fit.
